before photo gallery When you think of algae, would you ever imagine it to be turned into a soft wire, a textile dye, paint, or a bio-plastic? Studio Nienke Hoogvliet spent two years studying the algae and the possibility of using it as a material in the design and the results are COLLECTION SEA ME.
The two-piece collection includes a chair and a table that have been made as a result of algal explorations. The seat of the chair is woven with son algae that had been naturally dyed with algae. What has been remains of this initial project was used to create paint that is used on the table. These paint waste was then used to make bio-plastic bowls on top of the table. Their goal was for the waste from one process to be used in the next process in the hope of producing zero waste.
