Friday Five with Robert Brunner
industrial designer based in San Francisco Robert Brunner founded the design firm back munitions in 07 after spending many years working for other companies. After graduating from the State University of San Jose in 1981, he co-founded the Lunar board design company, which led to his time as director of industrial design at Apple, where he notoriously hired Jonathan Ive. After Apple, he became a partner of Pentagram to rupture on its own in 07, a jump that embodied the designs of Beats by Dre, Snap Polaroid, Polaroid Cube, intelligent OEAA Alert, Savant, Adobe Ink & Slide, and more recently, MI guitar. In his Friday Five, Brunner was challenged to choose only five things to highlight, so he chose to return to certain models of inspiration that influenced him over the years. Ammunition recently won a design Cooper Hewitt National award for product design.
1. Olivetti Logos 80 calculator by Mario Bellini (1978)
I became aware of the work of Mario Bellini for Olivetti when I was in the school design and forever influenced my approach to design. He was the true beginning of the technology design approach as functional sculpture. In particular, I am obsessed with the calculator Logos 80. The quasi-random assembly of block shapes with the acute angle in front, he gave a movement that was incredible. The form of the vocabulary and the color palette remains today completely modern.
2. Tizio by Richard Sapper (1972)
I fell in love with this piece when I saw him, and even though at time I could not afford in any way, I had to have one. Its architecture is beautiful and clever use of geometry was amazing. And means of using parallel arm parts for transferring the low voltage of the bulb is genius.
3. Low Pad chair by Jasper Morrison (1999)
4. Aston Martin DB9 by Henrik Fisker (04)
A form of incredibly sensual car. Powerful, elegant, refined, iconic. It was for me the definition of GT sports coupe. Just a nice impressive form.
5. Direct Libratone Airplay President Designit (2012)
