On October 4, 1957, when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the collective spirit of world was blown. Suddenly things that had seemed impossible were at hand. Designers and artists have been inspired to create works that responded to this new landscape of opportunity. In the 59 years that followed, it seems to have become a bit jaded. There is so much technology and novelty that we are no longer surprised by it. Futura, Spanish Sancal design firm wanted to bring back that feeling of excitement that designers once felt when confronted with the possibilities of this new final frontier.

Thus, the Futura collection back on how the future was imagined by the 1960 Rabanne modes Cousard and Cardind in Aarnio's designs and architecture of Niemeyer and translates as "60 futurism in a whole new brand of modern design. It is certainly meta.

When you look at the furniture manufactured by Sancal, it might be a little hard to imagine that a brand with such a strong foundation in the modern concept actually started by classic 18th century French chairs Louis XVI . Santiago Castaño was only twenty years old when he set up shop in a rickety old garage and started making French classic chairs for customers in northern Spain. "At the time, I was a one man band," Santiago remembered "I drew the plans, created the models, cut, sewn, padded, suppliers and customers visited ". The quality chairs attracted many customers as soon call Santiago with his brother Pepe and his wife Concha. Today the company is quite a family business, and even five members of the next generation in its ranks.

But this is not a family that spends a lot of time mulling over the past. They use their knowledge of the latest design traditions to grow in the future. And to do so, the Castaño family Capena-called some of their favorite design studios join them to imagine the future of design as seen through a lens 1960.

Futura Collection Concept Council

there was a wealth of material for designers to leverage their design inspiration, both the reality of the space race and the imagination of fiction that grew up around it (like 01 Space Odyssey and Star Trek). But it is not just a rehash of old ideas. It is a bold reinterpretation of the 60s futurism. To capture the spirit of futurism, Sancal has created a short film:

The retro-futuristic theme of the Futura collection is perfectly encapsulated in the collection Futura limited edition objects by Número26. Artists José Ángel Rodríguez Corral and Miriam Hernández Ros received the challenge to imagine the decorative arts objects as they could be seen through the eyes of a designer at the dawn of the space age.
